Harmonious living is back and so American Mission Style furniture. Mission Style furniture is very sophisticated mix of traditions – Spanish, American and British Arts and Crafts movement.
Spanish mission churches in 19th century California were fitted with simple, solid, well made, “mission oak” furniture, that gave the name to the style.
Later Arts and Crafts movement of the beginning 20th century, very similar to “Green” movement today, gave that style a new spirit and philosophy. Arts and Crafts movement was inspired by “back to humanity”, counter-industrial revolution ideas, very similar to what we have today.
THE IDEA
More and more people come to our store wanting to know more about Arts and Crafts style. Why I love it so much, because Arts and Crafts style is not only furniture style, it is embodiment of the ideals.
“Man is not a machine and deserves men made furniture that is as unique and individual as American character,” – this was the philosophy behind craftsman furniture made to last. It was a mix of an aesthetic and social reform, it was about beauty and about social change.
TIMELESS STYLE
Mission Style is a design that emphasizes simple horizontal and vertical lines and flat panels that accentuate the grain of the wood, usually oak.
Straightforward lines predominate, with little or no decoration, other than that which is incidental to function, such as forged iron hinges and latches.
Oak is the typical material, finished with its natural golden appearance that will age to a rich medium brown color. Components such as legs will often be straight, not tapered, and surfaces will be flat, rather than curved.
Cover patterns are intricate, natural, inspired by home traditions of the British countryside.
